3 Surprising Foods That Boost Your Immune System

One of the best things you can do to fight cancer and to make sure it doesn’t recur is to boost your immune system. There are lots of ways to do that which I talk about in my book, WTF?! I Have Cancer? and in my coaching program The Permanent Remission Project. One of my favorites to discuss is food. Because, yum!

If you’ve been following me at all, you know that I talk a lot about the King of immune boosting foods, the great green leafies, like spinach and kale. And you may have seen a few posts about how cancer-fighting the whole brassica family is: broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage.

So when I say three surprising foods that boost your immune system, I am not talking about those green veggies that hopefully you have already added to your diet. And you probably know that vitamin C boosts the immune system and that citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit are loaded with vitamin C. So, no surprise there either.

Yes, eat all of those nutritious whole foods! But when I say three surprising foods that boost your immune system, I’m talking about powerful superfood cancer fighters and immune system boosters that you don’t hear about every day and yet are just as powerful for boosting the immune system and fighting cancer in the process.

1. Mushrooms!

If green veggies are King of the immune boosters, then mushrooms are the Queen. Surprised? Several studies show that all mushrooms, even the common button mushroom have a strong protective effect against cancer and especially against breast cancer (source). Medicinal mushrooms, in particular Turkey Tail, Cordyceps, Reishi, and Shitake are powerful cancer fighters and immune boosters. 2. Onions and garlic!

The whole allium family which includes along with onions and garlic, leeks, shallots, chives and scallions, are powerful cancer fighting, anti-inflammatory antioxidant foods. Not only do these foods add fabulous flavor to your meals, they boost immunity. It all starts when you chop, crush or chew these foods as the enzyme alliinase, the same one that makes you cry when you chop them, starts building powerful immune building and cancer fighting compounds (source). So wear your protective goggles and add these flavor enhancers to your next meal.

3. Pomegranates and Berries!

These red/purple gems have powerful cancer fighting abilities. Super high in cancer fighting anti-oxidants, these superfoods also contain many other anticancer compounds like anthocyanins and ellagic acid (source). Virtually all berries and their juices are great to eat, including blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, acai berries and goji berries (source).
