How to Surthrive the Holidays

socks-by-the-fire

With the holidays in full swing, stress can be an ever present feeling. I see articles on “surviving the holidays” but I don’t want to merely survive. I want to thrive! How do we surthrive the holidays?

I think the secret to surthriving the holidays is through the concept of self-care. This is a topic about which I have written before. I’m bringing it up again because it’s super important! Especially during stressful times like the holidays. And it’s something that I continue to have to work on so I thought that might be true for you too.

We all know conceptually that without our health we have nothing. We don’t often live this way though, do we? How many of us put our health as our number one priority? Do you take care of yourself in body, mind and soul before you take care of your job, your relationships, your children even?

This is not what we are taught in our culture. We are taught to work hard, make money, take care of the kids, spouse, friends before we take care of ourselves. It’s looked down on as selfish to prioritize our own needs. This is particularly true for women, and even more so for women who are mothers. We tend to hope that there is some time left for a little me-time at the end of the day after taking care of everyone else.

What if that time doesn’t come? What happens when we put our health and wellness last after everyone else’s needs? Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way. What happens is at minimum you get burned out, crabby, short tempered and stressed out. At worst, you get sick. In my case, very sick. I was very busy juggling all 27 hats: chef, chauffeur, housekeeper, finance manager, social coordinator, entrepreneur, business woman, social media marketer, friend, wife, sister, daughter. Okay, maybe not 27, but there were probably more that I’m forgetting. I was juggling a lot and not taking care of myself and what happened was I got not one but two separate and aggressive cancers at the same time! I was forced to stop all of that and focus on one thing: saving my life.

One of the big lessons I learned was that my health is THE TOP priority. Strangely enough, it continues to be a struggle for me to put my health first. It feels indulgent. But I know that if I don’t take care of myself, stress can take over, creating hormone imbalances that affect my immune system. And no one wants a compromised immune system! Those stress hormones also hinder my body’s ability to let go of extra pounds (something to consider if you are struggling to lose weight).

So I have a challenge for you! For the rest of December, let’s put our health as the top priority and schedule in one hour a day that is just for our mental and physical health. Here are some self-care ideas for you to try:

  • Meditate
  • Go for a walk (walking meditation=two birds with one stone)
  • Get a massage
  • Work out
  • Take a yoga class
  • Get a manicure
  • Take an art class
  • Join a team sport you like
  • Color in one of those doodle books
  • Journal

Let me know in the comments below what you will do for self-care for the rest of December! Remember, an hour a day!

To your health,

Laren_sig
