Gratitude Aplenty

I just got back from a wonderful long weekend in sunny SoCal, mixing work and pleasure. I got to see some of my favorite people on the planet as well as give an important talk about How to Not Get Sick at the very cool ad agency, 72andSunny.

Of course I’m all about healthy yummy food and my peeps did not disappoint.

I went to an AMAZING place for lunch on our first day there called Café Gratitude in Venice. It is all vegan with a mind-blowing menu. They make cheeses from nuts like cashew and Brazil so it was the first time this dairy allergic gal could even entertain some of the menu items I normally have to steer clear of: Caesar salad with a nut cheese parmesan, Greek salad with a nut cheese feta and another Greek inspired salad with a nut cheese yoghurt tzaziki dressing.

But I didn’t choose any of these – I chose an eggplant “parmesan” sandwich. And it was AWESOME. In fact that’s what its name was on the menu. The menu says “I am” at the top and then all the items have inspiring and positive adjective names. So when you order you are supposed to say, “I am Awesome.” And if you don’t say it this way, your waiter will by saying to you, “You are awesome.” For my lunch, I also chose a green juice that was called “Complete” so I told the waiter “I am Completely Awesome!” It was fun. I sang the Awesome part.

Everyone’s food was delicious (I had bites of it all). Water was offered on the table in cool bottles from Spoken Glass, that are etched with inspiring words. I purchased the Love one for my home.
The next day we headed up north along the beautiful PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to Santa Barbara for my dear friend Cindy’s surprise birthday party. It was so special to see dear friends, some of whom I hadn’t seen in 20+ years! Note to self: go visit more often!

The next morning for breakfast we all met at Finch & Fork, the restaurant in the beautiful boutique Canary Hotel. I had a delicious and different version of Eggs Benedict that had Dungeoness Crab and asparagus spears on a brioche slice, poached eggs topped with fennel slivers and no heavy sauce whatsoever. It was perfect. We made sure to get our requisite water, drinking out of cool repurposed wine bottle water glasses. I’ve been searching online for them for our home as well!

I’m all about eating healthy fresh and inventive food. Southern California has got this concept down.
