In It For The Long Haul

I made this stupid inspiring New Year’s Resolution to run a 5K this year. I’ve never run one before in my life which is kind of surprising given I grew up in “Track Town, USA”. Sure, I’ve jogged for exercise from time to time in my life, but I’ve never been what I would consider a runner. The main reason for this is because I hate running.

You may be wondering right now why I would make this 5K resolution when I hate running. To tell you the truth, at this point in my training, I can no longer remember. The only thoughts I’m having about it right now are along the lines of “What was I thinking?”, “I’m never going to make it.” “This hill is going to kill me.” and the ultimate, “I’ll never be able to run for 3.1 miles if I can’t even run for 5 minutes without stopping.”

Does this last one surprise you? I mean, I’m a health coach! I am a healthy person by all reasonable accounts. I am at a healthy weight, my cholesterol levels are PERFECT, I eat a lot of veggies, avoid sugar and processed foods. I am even a pretty good yogi. But cardio? Not so much.

I tell you this because I want you to know that when you are taking on your unique health issues, and you come up against that point in your transition to a healthier lifestyle where you say to yourself, “What was I thinking?” or “I’ll never be able to achieve this goal!”, I want you to know I can relate. I am going through this myself right now with running. I am at that road block. I hate running about as much as you probably hate eating kale. I sooo want to quit this whole 5K idea. But I won’t — I am going to keep on keeping on.

Because that’s the thing about working toward a goal. There will be road blocks. There will be times you think this is impossible and want to quit. You may think you will never be able to achieve your goal of quitting soda, or eating more veggies or whatever your health goal happens to be. I am here to tell you that you can. Just notice the road block , re-imagine it as a hurdle and keep going right over it.

You might see if there’s something you need to keep you motivated–like an app (I have a great one for training for a 5K) or a training/health buddy, or a new item of clothing, or even a new blender for making green smoothies. But let’s be real–you don’t need to spend money. What is most important here is just to keep going. Keep moving in the direction of your goal. Be in it for the long haul.
